Why is using the right engine oil so important?
Motor oils for four-stroke motorcycle engines play a key role in ensuring trouble-free and efficient operation of the engine and contribute to ensuring maximal engine lifetime. Engine oil deliverables:
- lubrication and cooling of the engine’s structural elements
- cleaning the gasket and combustion chamber by removing soot and preventing deposits
- corrosion protection
- preventing wear and seizure
- drive unit lubrication in constructions with shared oil sump
- lubricating the clutch
Never take risks!
- Always only use engine oil with the performance level and viscosity grade specified by the manufacturer.
- Using engine oil with a performance level lower than that specified will cause dangerous oil deposits and engine wear making lifetime shorter.
- Engine oil of insufficient viscosity might cause wear and ignition problems for the engine.
- For motorcycles equipped with wet clutches, only use engine oil that has been certified by the relevant JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organisation) performance level. Using inadequate engine oil, inter-operation of the clutch and the drive unit will be unsatisfactory since the clutch may stick, skid, make a noise or skip, thus making gear changes more difficult.
- Four-stroke motorcycle engine oil must deliver the relevant friction characteristics in addition to high-level engine protection. Although engine oils for passenger cars such as API SL, SM, etc., meet engine performance level requirements, compliance is in general not assured regarding friction characteristics. Thus requirements described in the operating manual should always be followed because this is the only way to ensure operational safety for the motorcycle.
